Dr. Vinata Vedam-Mai

Vinata Vedam-Mai (PhD)

Principal Investigator

Originally from Bengaluru, India, I received my PhD from the University of Georgia. Research in my lab focuses on comprehending mechanisms of neuronal demise in neurodegenerative diseases in order to improve therapeutic strategies for their treatment. Specifically, we are focused on developing a novel immunomodulatory platform for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and to identify the role of the peripheral immune system and gut microbiota in the efficacy of this therapeutic platform in a preclinical model.

I enjoy dancing and singing, and I perform Indian classical dance routinely at various cultural events. I also enjoy spending time with my family playing tennis, traveling, and cooking with them.

Ultimately, I’m intent on exploring the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and evaluating methods of intervention that could uncouple these mechanisms and restore or assist normal function. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Central Florida, and I continued my education in the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Florida, where I eventually joined the lab of Malú Gámez Tansey, Ph.D. During my time in the Tansey Lab, I studied the role of peripheral inflammatory processes in neurodegenerative diseases with a focus on progranulin biology and endo-lysosomal function. After graduation, I remain committed to researching and evaluating disease-relevant mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases. In my free time, I read sci-fi/fiction novels and grow houseplants.

Lilia Benhabiles (MS Health Sciences)

I am deeply engaged in advancing research that contributes to developing immunotherapies for Parkinson’s disease and cancer, driven by a commitment to bring meaningful progress to patients’ lives. Previously, at the University of Tennessee, I specialized in respiratory immunology with a focus on RSV disease, investigating how early-life exposures to environmental factors such as allergens, pollutants, and respiratory viruses influence immune development and predispose individuals to chronic respiratory diseases later in life. My work centered on defining the cellular and molecular changes in the developing lung, examining how pollutants and viral infections shape pulmonary pathophysiology and host defense, with the long-term goal of identifying early immune triggers to inform effective interventions. Outside the lab, I find balance in running, hiking, traveling, and photography—pursuits that keep me grounded and inspired. I am always curious to learn new things and to grow both personally and professionally, while making meaningful connections along the way.

Anaïs Le Mauff (PhD)

I completed my PhD in arthropod neurobiology and then held my first postdoctoral position working on arthropod vector control and pathogen transmission. Now, I’m excited to transition and focus on Parkinson’s disease research as part of Dr. Vinata Vedam-Mai’s team, where I look forward to contributing to treatment approaches and a better understanding of this neurodegenerative disease. I hope my research can make a meaningful difference for people affected by neurodegenerative diseases. Outside the lab, I enjoy crafting, staying active with CrossFit, running, and recharging with nature by paddling in the springs.

Vivian Mesa

Hello, I’m Vivian, a Biomedical Engineering student in the University of Florida Honors College. I’m passionate about neuroscience and plan to pursue an MD–PhD with the goal of contributing to global health research, particularly in underdeveloped regions such as Central and South America. Before joining this lab, I worked under Dr. Kevin Otto in the Neuroprostheses Research Lab.
On campus, I am a member of Gators for Refugee Medical Relief (GRMR), an organization dedicated to supporting healthcare access and providing tutoring for displaced communities. I also founded Student-led Academic Peer Study (SLAPS), a program focused on building community, reviewing course content, and offering volunteering and leadership opportunities for students committed to academia.
Outside of academics, I enjoy reading, spending time at the beach, going to the gym, and exploring other self-care outlets to balance the intensity of my studies. I’m also always up for discovering new coffee shops, traveling, or just spending time with friends.

Raghvi Tailor

Hi! My name is Raghvi Tailor, and I’m currently an honors Biomedical Engineering student at the University of Florida. I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of medicine and technology, which is what drew me to this field. Alongside my classes and research with Dr. Vedam-Mai, I’ve gotten involved in design teams, shadowing, and volunteering at Shands, since I really enjoy applying what I learn to hands-on work.
In the future, I aspire to attend medical school and hopefully neurosurgical residency. I would also love to continue contributing to medical device development and innovative healthcare solutions that can make a real impact on patients’ lives.
Outside of academics, I’m passionate about dance—I lead and perform with UF’s Bharatanatyam team—and I love finding creative outlets, whether that’s through art, design, or exploring new ideas. When I’m not studying or in the lab, you’ll probably find me at practice, grabbing Taco Bell with friends, or planning my next project.

Raksha Dharani

I am a first-year undergraduate student at the University of Florida, pursuing a major in Microbiology and Cell Science within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. My academic interests center on understanding the intricate relationship between the brain and the immune system, particularly the potential of immunotherapy in treating neurological diseases. I am deeply motivated by the brain’s complexity and its essential role in regulating both physiological and psychological processes. Beyond research, I am passionate about promoting mental health awareness among cancer patients and exploring the therapeutic impact of art—particularly calligraphy—as a means of emotional expression and healing. In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, practicing dance, and engaging in creative pursuits that balance science and art. My long-term aspiration is to become a neurosurgeon specializing in oncology and neuroscience, contributing to advancements in both clinical care and translational research.
Organizations I am part of at UF: UF SASE, UF HEAL, and UF NeuroClub

Giancarlo Talgier Farfan

My name is Giancarlo Talgier, and I am an undergraduate student majoring in Health Science Pre-Med. My goal is to attend medical school while continually expanding my knowledge in research, with pursuing an M.D./Ph.D. Originally born in Barranquilla, Colombia, I am deeply passionate about community, mentorship, and representation in medicine. Outside of my time in the lab, I serve in leadership for PorColombia and on the Executive Board for the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA). Through both of these organizations, I work to empower and support the Latino community by connecting students with opportunities for medical school and providing access to professional guidance and mentorship.

Smriti Seshadri

I am a second-year undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Microbiology and Cell Sciences on the pre-medical track. I have a strong interest in research-driven clinical outcomes as well as expanding access to health education and patient care. By pursuing a career as a physician, I hope to turn my education into meaningful service to give back to my community. I was brought up in Jacksonville, FL, and I love going back home on the weekends to spend time with my family. One of my favorite things to do is perform Indian classical music as it is a very precise and therapeutic art that is close to my heart.
